#32 Sendai Ice Rink

2014.11.13

In early 2014 the city of Sendai celebrated when one of their own, the young Yuzuru Hanyu, took home the Olympics gold for men’s figure skating. Several years earlier, another Sendai native, Shizuka Arakawa, fought to win first place in the 2006 Olympics Ladies Singles competition. Although it may be rare to get a chance to meet one of these hometown heroes in person, enjoying a glide around the very same rink these athletes practiced on is as simple asa ten minute bus ride from Izumi Chou Station.

Located ina strip mall next to a large Seiyu grocery and department store is Ice Rink Sendai. Step through the doors and see large signed posters and memorabilia from the aforementioned Olympians on display. Pay for a ticket at the onsite vending machine for entry, and add on the price for rental skates should you need them. Then give the ticket to a staff member at the service window before heading inside. Someone can help you at the front desk if you need assistance.

The rink iswell kept and customer friendly. There are coin lockers, adequate seating around the rink, and easy access on and off the rink. The rink itself is very big. Beginners tend to hug the wall more than skate, while more advanced skaters can even be seen doing some tricks in the center of the ice. Maybe one of them will be the next Olympian? As someone who can’t complete two laps on the ice without falling down, I really enjoyed watching those graceful skaters as I caught my breath.

Keep in mind it is very cold inside so bring warm clothes. A shop just outside the ice rink sells tons of gear, so if you are a professional or looking for your own skates, you don’t have to look far. Step outside and there are restaurants and some shopping, plus the bus stop back to the station is right along the street outside the parking lot. You’ll have all you need.

It doesn’t matter if it is rainy, snowy, or blistering hot outside, the covered Sendai Ice Rink is open year round to entertain all those that want to try some skating of their own for a less than 30 minute trip from JR Sendai Station by public transportation.
