#70 仙台の「いろは横町」

仙台市の「いろは横町」という小路を歩くと、戦後の暮らしぶりを想像することができる。

ひどい空襲を受けた仙台は、たくさんの市民や建物を失ってしまった。

市内にはがれきしか残されてなかったが、市民は熱心に復興活動を始めた。

敷物やテーブルの上に商品をならべただけの小さな市場から始め、商人たちは協力しあって、小さいながらもにぎやかな商店街を作り上げた。

いろは横町は狭い二つの小路に分けられている。店先は小さいので、ほかの客や店員と話がしやすい。

また、トイレまでも店の中に作る場所がないため、離れた場所にある。

これが限られた狭い場所に急いで再建された証拠だ。

もともとに青葉通り一番近い小路では服や日常商品が売られていた。

反対の南町通り側では、食品や食堂で扱う品が売られていた。

しかし、現在は色々なサービス店、商店、飲食店が混ざりあっている。

この二つの小さなつながった路地でほとんど何でも見つけることができます。

年代ものを扱う店や現代のファッションブティックの隣に、フレンドリーなパブやレストランが独自の工夫を凝らした地元の料理を提供している。

「Rock N’ Roll Museum」ではロック音楽に関する商品を専門に扱っている。

周辺に茶具、古いサッカーユニーフォーム、工芸品など専門店もある。

昼と夜では営業している店が違うので、いろは横町を充分楽しむために、昼と夜に一度ずつ訪れてみることです。

面白い歴史、たくさんの独創的な店があるいろは横町があなたを、待っている。

いろは横町は青葉通りに歩行者天国のサンモールの中の横町です。JRあおば通り駅から徒歩10分。

With a little imagination, a stroll down the alleyways of Iroha Yokocho (いろは横町) transports you back to the days following WWII. After suffering a massive air raid that destroyed much of their city and killed thousands, Sendai residents were eager to rebuild. Starting as a small market of items sold on mats and tables, the merchants banded together to create a miniature, yet thriving business district complete with proper storefronts.

Iroha Yokocho is divided into two narrow alleys. Storefronts are small, meaning it is easy to engage in conversation with other customers or shopkeepers. Even bathrooms are separate, not being able to fit inside the businesses. This is evidence of the hasty rebuilding and limited space during reconstruction. Originally the alley closest to Aoba Avenue focused on selling clothing and general goods. The opposite alley on the Minami-machi Avenue side concentrated on selling food items and providing eateries. However, today there are a variety of services, shops, bars, and restaurants mixed together.

You can find almost anything in these two small connected alleys. Vintage and modern fashion boutiques rub shoulders with friendly pubs and restaurants serving up their own version of local cuisine. The Rock N’ Roll Museum specializes in popular rock merchandise and music, while other specialty shops sell things such as tea utensils, vintage soccer jerseys, and handmade crafts. To really enjoy Iroha Yokocho, you should visit once during the day and once at night as different shops are open different hours. With something for everyone and an interesting history, a trip to Iroha Yokocho is highly recommended by most locals.

Iroha Yokocho is located in Sun Mall, on an extension of the covered shopping arcade near Aoba Avenue. It is about a ten minute walk from Aoba-dori Station.
