#63 定義山の彫刻と五重塔

この山奥に見事な建築と芸術・一見の価値はあり

三角油揚げで有名な「定義山」。正式には、定義如来　西方寺。平家の重臣、肥後守平貞能（さだよし）公がこの地に落着き、平重盛から託された阿弥陀如来像を守り続けた。

表向きには、定義（さだよし＝じょうぎ）と称し受け継がれている。貞能公没後、阿弥陀如来像は公の霊廟（旧本堂）の本尊として守り続けられた。

旧本堂は昭和２年に気仙大工と地元の彫師の手で建て直された。

特に彫刻は目を見張るものが有り、外の向拝周辺の彫物は石井寅正により、内部の風神、雷神も石井寅正の作だが、

欄間の天女は昭和34年、東京の佐藤光重、十三菩薩は昭和43年、仙台の及川茂の作。

荘厳な山門は、旧本堂と同じで、気仙大工の中でも名棟梁の花輪喜久蔵によって昭和6年に建立。

彫物は仙台の石井寅正。

どれも見応えある彫物だが獅子のデザインが石井寅正独特のもので、宮城県北部の社寺には良く見ることができるが、他の地域ではお目にかかったことがない独創的なもの。

さらに、驚くのは、この山中に木陰の中から忽然と現れる五重塔。

構造　塔　身：総青森ひば白木造、

屋　根：青森ひば　コバ葺き、

相　輪：青銅製。

Carving & Pagoda in Jogisan Temple　

marvelous architecture and fine arts are worth seeing

“Jogisan temple” is famous as an origin of “Triangle deep fried Tofu”. It’s official name is

“Joginyorai-figure of the Buddha Saihoji-Temple”. Taira Sadayoshi, a chief retainer of Taira clan, escaped

from western Japan and settled down in this site in early 12th century. He maintained a figure of the

Buddha which was very important in Taira clan. For outside of their group, the name was “Jogi” which had

common tone but different letters to hide himself. The mausoleum was built on his grave and the figure of

Buddha was settled in it. The mausoleum was rebuilt by carpenters from Kesen district and a local sculptor

In 1927. Marvelous carvings are installed in the eaves and wooden panels with openwork carving used as a decorative transom above paper sliding doors.

And also impressed by the Pagoda of five stories. This pagoda was built in 1986, the height is 29m, main material is Japanese cypress. Please try these marvelous arts. ( Written by M.Sato).
